BCCN (Buckinghamshire Community Childminding Network) Early Help

Buckinghamshire County Council (BCC) has developed a model of community childminding that has proved successful in meeting our aim to provide a support system for children and young people who are vulnerable or have additional needs. Childcare is provided as part of BCCs Early Help Strategy and is usually free of charge subject to individual ability to contribute.

BCCN is a network of high quality, experienced childminders across the county of Buckinghamshire, which provides quality, flexible childcare for vulnerable children and young people aged from birth to 25 years, through a referral process.

Referrals are made by professionals.  The purpose of the childcare is to support families through their crisis period in order to try and keep the families together. It is an intervention measure and not deemed to be a long term package of care.  It may enable families to access other services as part of an intervention plan or provide a safe and stimulating environment for a child in need.

Referrals are discussed at a Multi-Agency Management Group panel where decisions are made as to whether or not the referral meets the criteria; childminders are then approached to provide the relevant care dependant on their experience and their current private care commitments.  Parents are asked if they can make a contribution especially if there would be the need for the childminder to transport the child or young person to and from the setting.  Childcare is initially provided for up to 8 weeks, a few hours per day during the week or at the weekend and, dependant on the individual needs, overnight care can be provided.

Care is provided in order to support children and families based on the BCC Early Help threshold Document where families meet level 3 or 4.  Where the family meets two or more criteria at level 2 childcare may be provided.

Where a Family Star has been completed or the family is supported through the Family Resilience Service and childcare has been identified as part of the support plan, an application form is not required for completion.  These referrals can be made by telephoning 07740106986

All current documentation for the referral process and threshold documents can be found at https://extranet.buckscc.gov.uk/early-years/childminders-and-nannies/bccn/

As part of the process there is a requirement for all parties involved in the referral to complete an evaluation of the service.
