Parenting programmes

We offer parenting programmes to families looking for help with managing their children's behaviour.

We're here to help you learn how to support your children in all areas of their development.

We have the following parenting programmes available for parents living in Dorset and BCP (Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole):

  • The Incredible Years Pre-school group programme for parents of children aged 3-6 years (14 weeks)
  • The Incredible Years School Age group programme for parents of children aged 6-12 years (12 weeks)
  • The Incredible Years group programme for parents of children aged 6 to 12 with a diagnosis of ADHD (18 weeks)

The Incredible Years parenting programme was developed by Carolyn Webster-Stratton, a Clinical Psychologist at the University of Washington.

The Incredible Years Programmes are among a number of Evidence Based Programmes (others include Triple P programmes) that are shown to reduce behaviour difficulties in children. We receive referrals directly from paediatricians working at both Dorchester and Poole Child Development Centres, and from discussion with these doctors we know that they support and recommend this programme for parents of children exhibiting challenging behaviour.

You will explore how to enjoy playing and spending time with your child and discover ways of encouraging positive behaviours.

We will help you find ways of handling misbehaviour in an appropriate and effective way.

In turn, we hope your relationship with your child will improve and they will benefit from greater social skills and a happier, more contented outlook.

Feedback from a parent who has recently completed a programme:

'Initially was referred through a process of getting a referral to a community paediatrician, and anxious about a group delivery, but as the course has gone I am now feeling that there has been benefit to my parenting skills, and I feel more confident I am using positive strategies’
