Torbay Children's Centres

Having fun in playgroup

Childminder support groups are available in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, and are based in children's centres.

These groups were formed by childminders as a means of meeting and befriending other childminders by offering support and advice. They are a useful means of gathering information and being kept informed about any changes that may impact upon your business.

They are very informal, and you can drop in for all or part of the sessions. They provide a valuable means of improving children's social skills whilst allowing them to access new play opportunities that may not be available in your home. They are also a recommended way of building your business, as childminders will often recommend other childminders to parents, and pass on their contact details. Members of the Early Years Team often visit the groups, and you can discuss a range of different things with them such as observation, assessment, and planning documentation and processes.

How to get involved

The groups are free and can be accessed once you are registered by Ofsted.

Currently groups are held at Watcombe and Cockington Children's Centres in Torquay, Oldway Children Centre in Paignton, and Chestnut Children's Centre in Brixham. Please contact your Childminding Development Worker for more details on 01803 208696.

For other information, resources and sources of support, contact The Childcare Information Helpline on 0800 2346 346.

Every Local Authority will provide a service aimed at supporting childminders, promoting drop-in sessions, toy libraries, business support, training and career opportunities.
