This Is My Poem About Pakistan by Bisma Butt

I flew from Glasgow to Islamabad,

I fell asleep as it was a long journey,

When I arrived there was a big welcome party at the airport,

The weather was good,

I ate lots of naan (bread) and dahl (lentil curry),

I got ill, so it stopped me having fun,

It was nice to hear the Azaan (Muslim prayer call) in public,

I had never heard it so loud, especially not in Scotland,

I did lots of shopping in the Bazaar (shopping centre),

We ate ice cream and bought artificial jewellery and shalwar kameez (traditional Pakistani dress) so I can wear it here in Scotland.

Tropical Cape Verde by Angeline Correia

Drowning people not so fun,

I am from Praia the main city,

Where you can pick up a cheeky hickey,

Don’t turn away it’s better that Hawaii by far,

You can stay in our hotels they are 5 Star!

Portugal by Magarida Tente

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

I am from Portugal,

What about you?

I am from Lisboa,

The main city,

The sun shines every morning,

Right in the window,

The birds are tweeting,

The sky is blue,

The beach is a desert,

My family wakes up at 7am,

I wake up at 11am,

The breakfast is on the table,

Fresh juice and warm bread.

Language by Lucja Zembrzuska

My family comes from many places,

And most of them have different faces,

Not everyone is super pale,

Nor are they super dark,

Polish, Italian, English, Dutch and Russian,

Are most of the languages used in our discussion,

Some of us moved to different countries,

Because of the state of our own country.

Girls by Amal Abdalla

There are some Muslim girls who aren’t allowed to go out because their family’s are really strict. They don’t allow girls to go out because the parents are scared for their children because something might happen to them. They are just allowed to go to school they are not allowed to go out with their friends. But I am talking about some parents, not all parents. My parents let me go out with my friends because they trust me and they know what I am doing outside and I tell them if I am going out with girls or boys but if someone from the Sudanese community saw me with boys outside they would think in a wrong way. But I really don’t mind because my parents know where I am going and trust me. I don’t really think it is fair for the girls who can’t go out with their friends because it will be really boring for them staying at home. It may be they don’t do anything wrong outside and I think parents should let their children go out and they have to trust their children.

Is Edinburgh Safe? By Lucja

I know that many people don’t care about the opinion of a teenager but I’m going to share mine anyway because nobody can stop me. I travel a lot and in all honesty Edinburgh is the safest city I have been and lived in. My hometown was pretty dangerous, I would only be allowed to go out to places near my house when I wanted to go somewhere by myself. Only recently I got used to walking by myself somewhere that wasn’t near my or my aunts/grandma’s house whenever I am in my hometown. When I was little I would only go far if I had a group of friends with me. Meanwhile my sister can go to Princes Street by herself and as long as she tells us and she has her phone with her we know she is safe. I also think that the fact that Edinburgh is bigger and busier adds to the safety because if somebody tries to kidnap you and there are people around, if you scream or act like you are in danger at least one person will help you. Both of my parents also think that Edinburgh is safe, they’re okay with me going anywhere in Edinburgh as long as I have my phone with me. Once I missed my bus and had to wait for 48 minutes for the next one, so I called my parents and they said that as long as I am safe and I have something to do then they are okay with me waiting. If something happened in my hometown my dad would probably get his bike out and pick me up, because he would be scared something would happen. Whenever I am in a different city for example Glasgow, I always get scared whenever I am walking by myself, because I won’t know the place well, so of course after living in Edinburgh for 3-4 years I would know my way around the town. It also has a low crime rate which is really important, because it shows that if you had to pick a city to visit in Scotland it should be Edinburgh.

Friendship is:

- sharing

- forgiveness

- trust

- love

- sleep over

- respect

- listening

Friendship is good, because you can share with your friend. Forgiveness is when someone makes a mistake and they say sorry. Trust is good, when your friend trusts you, for example I gave her money and I trust her that she will give me my money back. Best friend is love, sharing, trusting, sleep over.

Blog by Angelina Corriera

Okay let me be clear, even though I have two current nationalities which are Portuguese/Cape Verdean, I think I know more about Scotland or the UK than anything else. I am blessed that I was born Cape Verdean but I don’t know everything about it. All I can say is I kind of refer to English as my first language because I know more English than Portuguese YOLO.

Blog by Shakira

Since I arrived in this class, I have presented many things about my life and I made many beautiful things in this class. I presented my religion, I told them where is my country and I told them the language I speak is Romanian and I was born in Romania.

I showed them pictures of me when I was little. I told them my story about when I was little. I showed them many things about me and my family...and not much else.

Terrorists by Rekha Kaur Singh

When someone says the word ‘Terrorist’ you would think of guns, bombs, bloodbath, crying, screaming or shouting in a stereotypical way. People think that Muslims are terrorists. According to the New York Times Arab terrorists before 1980s was 317% and Islamic terrorists in the 2000s was 182% and the Muslim terrorists was 46%. But not all the time is it Muslim’s. Sometimes it is Christian’s with a death of 11.3 out of 12 and Buddhists with a death rate of 4. So it’s not always Muslims that try to cause harm.

Culture by Bisma Butt

I want to write about my culture. This includes my religion, I want people to learn about my religion. I pray 5 times a day it is part of my religion. I read the Quran in Annandale mosque 4 times a week after school. A sister at the mosque helps me pronounce the Arabic in the Quran properly. We always pray in Arabic.

Duke of Edinburgh Award by Nisha Singh

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a very fun and challenging course. I am so glad that I am taking part in this exciting opportunity. This is growing my confidence and education. In my group we have six different cultures, Sikh, Portugese, Cape Verdean, Pakistani, Polish and Romanian. I really enjoy learning about different cultures and I love teaching people about Sikhism. My favourite thing is learning about the different foods from different countries. My family is Indian and the food is really different to Scottish food. Another thing that we learn is different music, Indian music completely different to Portuguese and Polish music. I am much more confident now and before the course I didn’t think too much about my family history, now I know more about my family and others.

Martisov by Luisa Muntean

In Romania we have a tradition when it is approaching March. We put a threaded bracelet on our hand which is braided in red and white strings. This tradition is descended from our ancestors and still practice nowadays they say if you put this on your wrist you can wear it the whole month and you will be beautiful and be successful in life.

Blog by Maria Cirpaci

My name is Maria and my family name is Cirpaci. I was born in Spain. I was born in a car, it was great people who took my mum to hospital. It was my friend Sakira's uncle who took my mum. A few months later my parents decided to move back to Romania, because my older sister was already living there with my dad's mum. When I was 6 years old, my family decided to move to Scotland, Edinburgh. I have been there for 5 years. I started school in Leith, I was scared, I didn't know what people were saying. I am now S3, I have friends Luisa and Sakira, I feel happy now. I hope they  are with me all the time.

It is important for people to know my story, because it gives them an idea about my heritage. I tried different people's food when we shared in class. Some food tasted nice, some didn't. We learnt to respect others by having a food tasting class. Sarmale is cabbage stuffed with pork.

Blog by Angeline Correia

I have had fun on this heritage project, I really enjoyed sharing my heritage with the group. It made me slightly more confident as a young woman. I am Cape Verdean, but people don't understand that, I just say I'm Portuguese because I lived in Portugal for 3 years. I have learned that Asian desserts are not for me. But I do like Ogorkowa, a Polish soup. I really enjoyed a cake Lucja brought in.

I listened to Romanian music and I find that it has got similar beats to Portuguese music. The art project helped me to express myself which was nice too.
