Salim's story - Challenge

Salim's story - Challenge

Salim was referred to Challenge Scotland by Shawlands Academy, to develop his employability skills and to educate him about the consequences of non-attendance and not fulfilling school commitments.

Barriers identified

Salim's attitude at first to staff and other participants was very negative and was disruptive.

After discussions with staff, he admitted that school could have been better for him if he had listened to his teachers and also told staff he felt inadequate in the English language.

Staff encouraged Salim to participate in simple tasks, measuring the area to be mono-blocked and then engage in further tasks during the timeline of the Challenge.

From strength to strength

Over the course of the short project, Salim became a chatty young man with a great sense of humour. Throughout the programme Salim grew form strength to strength and is returning to school where he will be supported with ESOL training (English for Speakers of Other Languages).

Mr Alexander, Shawlands Academy, commented

"the difference in Salim is very visible and he should take credit for his progress and look forward to the future with confidence."

It is anticipated that Salim will be offered another opportunity with Action for Children to participate on a Youthbuild or Forestry Project.

Salim said:

"The lads have been brilliant in supporting me and I would tell any young person looking for opportunities to try the programme."
